Description & Function

The IntelliCorr/CBD™ (Central Business District) is a preemption module that interfaces with the traffic controller to provide an integrated safety management system. The preemption capability is accomplished by using a multi-functional platform with a 900 MHz radio network, advanced real-time processing, and a C1 controller interface that integrate traffic and emergency management. Designed to work with virtually all 170 traffic controllers. The IntelliCorr/CBD™ allows communities to implement emerging safety management technologies while preserving their original traffic controller investment.

The IntelliCorr/CBD™ is a shelf-mounted module that is easily cabled to 170 controllers. The IntelliCorr/CBD™ is based on an advanced microprocessor, GPS receiver, 900 MHz microwave transceiver, and 418 MHz transceiver. These components give the IntelliCorr/CBD™ a full range of preemption/prioritization capabilities along with secure wireless communication.

The IntelliCorr/CBD™ module can be configured to send DMS messages over wireless links to each IntelliSign™ display board that is located at the intersection. These messages can provide warning of emergency vehicles traveling through the intersection, downstream messages of bus arrivals and bus scheduling information at bus stops.

The preemptive environment in the graphic above has one primary corridor, Maple Street, and a secondary access for Lemon Creek EMS on First Street. This corridor is used for emergency traffic. The police and EMS vehicles have been simultaneously dispatched to an emergency and the Maple corridor is the quickest route.

The IntelliCorr/CBD™ module in the intersection cabinet begins tracking their locations using GPS coordinates from each vehicle. Additionally the IntelliCorr/CBD™ receives speed and direction data from each vehicle in real-time. This combination of data allows the IntelliCorr/CBD™ to compute estimated time-of-arrival of each vehicle to the intersection allowing it to determine which vehicle should be granted a preemption request. This assures that only one emergency vehicle will receive the GREEN light at the First and Maple intersection, thus assuring a safe and secure passage for that emergency vehicle.

Concurrently with these operations, the IntelliCorr/CBD™ module ascertains which messages are to be sent to the IntelliSigns™. The IntelliSigns™ that are positioned for cross and opposing traffic will receive warning messages indicating the direction of the emergency vehicle. Downstream intersections can be prepared with sign messages that inform motorists of the emergency and directs their movement, such as “move to the right” and “clear intersection.”
