Dateline Houston (8/11/2008)

Houston, TX (TranStar)

Currently there are three on-going projects at TranStar:

1. Emergency Vehicle Prioritization

This project requires installing wireless equipment in four Harris County intersections, a TranStar test van, and a Volunteer Fire Department to demonstrate traffic signal priority (a green light providing clear, safe passage). Phases 1 & 2 were completed in December 2006. A three month evaluation phase leads to deployment of 100 intersections and 50 mobile transponders. Project potential is 2,000 – 3,000 intersections and 100 – 200 mobile transponders.

2. Lane Control with Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)

This project demonstrates E-ViEWS DMS signs controlling traffic lanes at intersections. This mitigates congestion and more effectively moves traffic during rush hours. It requires installing 12 guidance signs (one for each approach lane), 4 signs at the intersection roadside, and 12 signs 300 feet in advance. Fifty six signs for two intersections. We installed a DMS intersection sign and network equipment mid October to evaluate control of sign images from the TranStar traffic management center.

3. GPS Time Server

Thirdly we installed for evaluation our GPS Time Server product, TS 2070, that plugs into the 2070 controller providing GPS time synchronization. This prevents controller time drift during coordinated signalization of intersections. Harris County and the City of Houston use coordinated signals to better move traffic and reduce congestion in both county and city. The potential for this product in Houston is 1000 intersections in Harris County and 2500 in the City of Houston.

The value of having this agency (TranStar) install, test and evaluate systems is immeasurable in that it can result not only in direct orders for systems and services but also in the possibility of a favorable review in a white paper.
